Samoa: The festival islands that time forgot

When Samoa Air recently announced it would start charging passengers by weight rather than seat, it was deemed fairly controversial. Not least because Samoa has battled obesity since fast food was introduced to its remote islands in the 1960s.

But the airline stuck to its guns and here I am, in the middle of the South Pacific, standing on a set of scales in a very warm airport. My journey from Upolu island to Savai’i takes just 15 minutes and, at a rate of 34p per kilo, costs a mere £20.58. Samoa is formed of two main islands and a handful of smaller ones (American Samoa sits about 60km east) and from my seat in the sky, they are emerald specks in the Pacific Ocean.
