A punishment to rural Samoan villages for the behaviour of its residents while in New Zealand will not have a big impact on New Zealand's Recognised Seasonal Employer scheme, officials say.

Samoan Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sa'ilele recently announced that as punishment for any shameful behaviour by Samoan RSE workers while working in New Zealand, the worker's whole Samoan village would then be banned from taking part in such schemes for two to four years.

While New Zealand officials could not comment on the policy of another government, a spokesperson at the office of Immigration Minister Michael Woodhouse said the punishments were not likely to have a big impact here, as the majority of RSE workers in New Zealand were not from Samoa.
